Abstract

Information technology (IT) developments of the past 10 years have made it possible to develop more flexible transport models. The design and building of these models, as well as their usage, are getting more and more flexible. In the Netherlands, QQQ Delft has developed the `TRANS' traffic assignment model for NS Reizigers and Railned. `TRANS is such a modern transport model and it is used for the analysis of the behaviour of travellers. `TRANS' determines the best transport possibilities for individual travellers and then assigns them to the trains. Using `TRANS', questions can be answered, such as: What is the total amount of km's travelled over the entire network; and what is the average speed of travel and the average number of changes? For making and changing railway networks, the `network editor', which functions with a geographical interface, was built. For making and changing timetables, the, also geographical, `timetable editor' was built. On the output side, `TRANS' offers standard surveys and offers the developer the possibility for generating his/her own abstracts using SQL. All parts of `TRANS' are established in such a way that an optimal exchange with the MS Office environment is possible. (A)
