Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to compare the acute effects of a transdermal nicotine system with placebo, on sleep and performance of chronic smokers in the first 48 hours of abstinence from smoking using polysomnographic recording techniques, a subjective sleep quality questionnaire and a battery of psychomotor and cognitive tests. Changes after drug and placebo were adjusted for baseline (i.e. smoking) values, measured before treatment.
