Abstract

A literature study was done and a questionnaire survey held among representatives of interest groups to investigate the possibilities for applying park and ride (P+R) schemes (transferia) in the Netherlands. The main topics are: (1) the development of transport of persons in the Netherlands; (2) the public transport and car system; (3) transport mode choice; (4) the location choice of possible P+R schemes; (5) the expected use of these schemes; (6) quality requirements for P+R schemes; and (7) the costs and benefits of designs of some P+R schemes. The study places emphasis on the following five Dutch cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven. It is asserted that large-scale P+R schemes will not be constructed in these cities for some time. This is due mainly to the expected high construction costs of public transport facilities. However, it is quite possible that this will be done in the future.
