Abstract

TRANSFORMES (Integration of Transport and Urban Form in the European Region of Strasbourg) is a European Commission funded project aimed at integrating land use and transport planning on a regional level and the implementation of local projects. In the first phase, a Systems Thinking reference model was built following a review of scientific knowledge and best practice processes. The regional planning experiences of six different urban regions were investigated: Zuid-Holland (Netherlands), Freiburg (Germany), Geneva (Switzerland), Monpellier, (France), Barcelona (Spain), and Chicago (USA). The key elements are discussed: integrated policies on a regional and local level, evaluation of impacts on a systems level, techniques and instruments for supporting strategic policies, and commitment and participation. A case study was conducted of urban development and transport development in the Strasbourg region. Important infrastructure projects in the region are listed. A territorial strategy for the cross-border region was developed. Challenges for the European region of Strasbourg are discussed. For the covering entry of this conference please see ITRD E132365
