Abstract

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) TransGuide System, an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), was selected by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to serve as a showcase for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) under the Model Deployment Initiative (MDI) program. A primary goal of the MDI is to showcase ITS technologies in a multi-model environment. This paper discusses the various ITS technologies that are being added to the TransGuide environment during the MDI program. The projects being implemented under the TransGuide MDI program include: (1) Data Server - A centralized data storage system for all data collected in the TransGuide MDI environment. The Data Server maintains travel speed information for over 950 kilometers of freeways and arterials; (2) Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) - The deployment of AVI tags and readers on freeways and arterials. The data from the AVI tags allow the computation of travel time and speed; (3) Traveler Information Kiosks: The development of a Kiosk to provide residents and tourists with travel data in public areas, and (4) Railroad Advance Delay Warning (AWARD): The addition of train sensors to detect and predict train traffic as it passes through the city and integration of the data into the ATMS environment.
