Abstract

The National ITS Architecture was developed for the entire transportation community to assist with transit and traffic project development and implementation throughout the US. At the conclusion of the architecture development program, it was recognized that additional audience specific guidelines for the National ITS Architecture would enhance the usefulness of the program deliverables and help planners and implementers to obtain maximum benefits from the work. It was decided that the first set of guidelines to be developed would be focused on the needs and characteristics of the transit community. This paper describes the background within which the transit guidelines were developed and provides an overview of the information contained in the guidelines.
