Abstract

This document examines the long-term challenges facing London's transport network in the context of the overall transport objectives. Major increases in population, jobs and housing are anticipated, resulting in a 30% increase in public transport pasenger kilometres travelled in the morning peak by 2025. This requires expansion of public transport capacity (mainline rail, underground, bus and light rail) and of cycling and walking, using sustainable means. Management of traffic congestion, social inclusion and tackling climate change are all considered important. Management of existing transport capacity, reducing the demand for travel, development of new capacity and policies for the future are considered.
