Transport and safety in Japan: P-DRGS and Eco-Point TDM project in the second stage at the Aichi Expo.

Abstract

Two projects developed at Nagoya University, Japan, and to be demonstrated at the Aichi EXPO showcase in 2005, are described. The first is P-DRGS (Probe-vehicle-based Dynamic Route Guidance System), which involves the deployment of the world's largest fleet of probe cars in Nagoya to validate the use of a dynamic route guidance system developed by the six-member P-DRGS Consortium (Nagoya University, NEC Corporation, Denso Corporation, Toyota Mapmaster Inc., the Japan Weather Association and A-Works Co. Ltd.). The development and characteristics of the prototype system PRONAVI are described. The second project is the Eco-Point TDM project in which commuters in highly trafficked urban areas are awarded Public Transportation Eco-Points for choosing to use public transport. Points can be used to receive discounts on public transport fares and other rewards. An experiment conducted in 2004 to test the system is described. Plans to combine the PRONAVI system and Eco-Point TDM are considered. The Japanese government's policy towards improving intelligent transport systems under the e-Japan Priority Policy Program is discussed.
