Abstract

The UK Government launched the Transport Direct portal in December 2004. The portal integrates existing sources of transport information. Features include door-to-door journey planning, road journey plans and timings, real time information for rail and road users, Ordnance Survey maps, and the locations of railway stations, airports and coach stations. The service is currently accessed online but is to be made available via mobile phone and personal digital assistants. The way in which the portal obtains its data and how the data are processed are explained. One aim of the system was to raise awareness of all travel opportunities in order to increase the uptake of public transport. For this reason road journey planning is available for comparison with public transport.
