Abstract

Worsening road congestion and a poorer urban environment highlight the importance of good public transport to the wellbeing and efficiency of towns and cities. Transport is high on the political agenda. Bus deregulation in 1986 resulted in new thinking and new services. An 'light rapid transit LRT boom' is also gaining momentum. But public transport's market share continues to decline. Road space and transport resources will always be limited so there is much to be gained by cooperation between modes. The industry should work together and with motorists to provide the transport mix necessary for cities to be efficient, convenient and attractive. (A)
