Both Transport for London (TfL) and Trafficmaster have automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera networks in the London area, but whilst TfL's network is concentrated in central London, Trafficmaster's network covers outer London. The concept of exchanging ANPR data to obtain London-wide coverage created commercial, legal and technical challenges, but offeredsignificant benefits to both parties. Trafficmaster was contracted to build a Data Exchange System, which became operational towards the end of 2005. This system provides both organisations with comprehensive real-time information on the performance of the London road network and is an excellent example of the private and public sectors working successfully in partnership.
