Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of some current transport policy issues affecting the movement of people within Europe. An examination of the transport policies of individual countries shows a variety of policy making structures, concerns and strategies. The international implications of national policies are discussed. The importance of a Europe-wide transport policy is emphasised and initiatives being made are outlined. The effectiveness of different transport policies in influencing travel behaviour is then considered. Figures are provided illustrating mode changes achieved in inner city areas. A table is presented which assesses the contributions of various measures towards alleviating congestion. The conflict between controlling mobility and economic growth is discussed.
