Abstract

Well known transport policy objectives have led to the development of quite a number of strategies and technological measures to reach these goals. Improved alignment of roads, improved equipment such as well perceivable signs, dynamic sign, and dynamic information using different communication channels and improved regulations in general have been developed. The parallel development of better vehicle technologies have led to an increase of safety and reduction of accident rates despite the fact, that today roads are much more overloaded than in earlier times. This elaboration shall discuss the possibilities of emerging ITS technologies which may support road authorities, car owners, road operators and other actors concerned to achieve higher throughputs, better safety and a better exploitation of existing transport capacities in general.
