Abstract

The overall objective of the ADONIS (Analysis and Development Of New Insight into Substitution of short car trips) project: "how can short car trips in big cities be substituted by walking or cycling" has been considered in terms of: (a) cyclists', pedestrians' and car drivers' reasons for mode choice; (b) interesting and new physical and non-physical measures for cyclists and pedestrians; (c) statements from people who have been involved in an accident; and (d) national differences, if any. In this concluding report attempts are made to guide to solutions that promote a shift to cycling and walking in big cities by suggesting a wide range of measures. All results presented here are based on three reports published at the beginning of 1998, so this report is delimited to major findings from the three studies leading to a list of recommendations.
