Abstract

One of the corporate goals of Transport SA is a "transport system in harmony with the environment". In order to meet this commitment the Agency has developed a comprehensive, integrated system of environmental management for the construction phase of road, bridge and marine facilities. This paper describes the methodology used by Transport SA to develop this system. The management system is documented in a suite of guideline documents together with a Code of Practice, Master Specification requirements and Prequalification Criteria. To assist in the understanding and adoption of the system a two stage training program is being undertaken for Transport SA staff and project contractors. While it is too early to fully quantify the benefits of the system, immediate improvements have been made and it is expected that these benefits will continue to flow. (A)
