Abstract

Advanced road Transport Telematics (ATT) offers an alternative to further road construction by applying information technology and telecommunications to improve existing road infrastructure. TRL is participating in National and European programmes aimed at increasing road safety and efficiency and helping to reduce damage to the environment. Research and development is already being applied in areas such as urban and inter-urban traffic management, driver information and enforcement. Even concepts such as electronic tolling and "intelligent" vehicles, which seemed futuristic a few years ago, are being demonstrated. This paper reviews recent developments. (A)
