Abstract

This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the nation's transportation system and the state of transportation statistics. This report analyses trends and recent developments related to travel, freight movement, system extent and condition, the economic performance of transportation, safety, energy, and the environmental consequences of transportation. This year's report presents analysis of over 80 transportation topics enhanced by data charts, tables, and maps. While this edition updates many issues presented previously, it also introduces a number of new or emerging topics. These include magnetic levitation high-speed rail, access by the disabled to public transit services, and the growing use of intelligent transportation systems in commercial vehicle operations. In addition, this report highlights many of the impacts on transportation caused by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As in previous editions, this report discusses the condition and performance of the U.S. transportation system, its economic performance, safety record, and related energy and environmental impacts. This report is a companion to the National Transportation Statistics report. (Author/publisher)
