The 2000 Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Transportation Association of Canada was held in Edmonton, Alberta, October 1-4, 2000 under the theme 'Transportation, Trade, Tourism and Technology. Papers were presented at the following sessions: Opening plenary session: transportation, trade, tourism and technology; Canadian Strategic Highway Research Program (C-SHRP); 1999 TAC environmental achievement award nominations; Reducing the environmental effects of transportation through technology; Barriers to public-private partnerships: a look at institutional reform; Planning and design considerations for transportation gateways, border crossings and trade corridors; Risk management in the roads sector - geometric design; Road network screening for identifying and prioritising safety improvements; Highway/railway grade crossing safety - a shared responsibility; Maintenance/preservation contracting - the second generation; Road weather information systems (RWIS): an emerging technology; Transportation corridors: improving Canada's trade prospects for the new century; Assessment of user costs in pavement infrastructure life-cycle costing; Innovative pavement design and evaluation techniques; Recent examples of user cost implementation for pavement life-cycle cost analysis; Materials testing - innovative methods and applied technology; Use of geosynthetics and other soil reinforcement techniques; Use of natural materials to improve earthwork characteristics; Unique bridges: unique renewals in the public eye; Modal integration - opportunities and strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions; New technologies in traffic engineering; Risk management in the roads sector - safety management; Signage for tourists - tourist facilities and major sporting events; To and through: ensuring intercity and intracity transportation work together to move passengers and goods.
