Abstract

Since 1996 when use of the vics (vehicle information and communication system) started in japan, service areas have been extended and more drivers have been able to receive travel times in real time. Travel time is so important to traffic data that it is indispensable for dynamic route search in navigation systems. however, currently provided travel time is not predicted but present data and navigation systems sometimes cannot provide drivers with an appropriate route. A travel time prediction method was developed which is based on traffic conditions propagation model. The method is especially suitable for expressways and for short-term prediction. The algorithm for short-term prediction method and evaluation of the method are described.
