Dynamic message signs (DMS) are one of the most visible elements of intelligent transportation systems, but are often left blank or with only vaguetravel information. This article discusses how these signs could be put to better use by providing travel time messages. Time-based messages allowpeople to make choices and better control their travel. At least 17 metropolitan areas are displaying estimates of travel time on their DMS, and the experiences of two departments of transportation (Georgia and Wisconsin) in implementing these systems are described. Customer feedback for these messages has been overwhelmingly positive.
