Abstract

Presently, due to an aggregation of such circumstances as desire to conserve energy, rising transportation costs, and decreasing cost of telecommunications coupled with its enhanced capability, there is interest in the topic of substituting telecommunications for travel. It is also generally believed that transportation in certain situations is stimulated by telecommunications. Although definitive answers on the substitution and stimulation phenomena are not available, useful insight has recently been provided through research. This paper describes the current understanding of the issue of travel vs. telecommunication.
