Based on almost ten years of R&D work on traveller and passenger information services performed in Gothenburg, a somewhat elusive framework within which this development has taken place can be identified. The framework can be characterised by (i) a demonstrated political vision of high quality transport services for the citizens, (ii) the acceptance of the need for a long term and step-by-step implementation process, (iii) the high degree of user involvement in the development work, and finally (iv) an arena where researchers, developers, suppliers, end users, and authorities have been able to meet, discuss and in collaborative work reach a common understanding of what are the necessary stages of a fruitful and constructive R&D process. Some of the most important and crucial factors for the success are described more in detail and they are: (a) The technical platform - KomFram; (b) The GoTiC Research programme; (c) The systems approach; (d) The user-oriented design; and (e) The information centre.
