Regional and rural Queensland suffers from flooding particularly in the wet season. This flooding causes extensive road closures and rural and remote communities suffer the adverse consequences associated with the restricted movement of people and goods and access to essential services. In many cases these road closures can last for months at a time and detours are thousands of kilometres in length. The paper describes the measures initiated by Main Roads, but in cooperation with a range of agencies, to improve the quality and timeliness of information to the public about road closures in times of prolonged flooding. Its primary focus is on an agreement developed between Main Roads and the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) for the distribution of traveller information relating to road closures due to wet weather. In many aspects this agreement exhibits the characteristics of a successful public-private partnership between a government entity, Main Roads and a non-government entity, the RACQ.
