Abstract

The PROMISE project is part of the European Commission's DRIVE II programme, which aims to develop and test multi-modal traveller information systems. Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) offering wireless communication service is a European digital cellular system. Being a multiservice system, the GSM includes both speech services and data services. In DRIVE/Promise GSM-SMS has been taken into use to provide traveller information services to the users of two-way hand-held GSM-SMS terminals. This paper describes both the short message service and the traveller information service. The systems architecture for both systems is presented briefly. The design of the screen for the traveller information service is also presented.
