This report points out the important contribution made by international travel to the economy and provides a detailed analysis of the European travel market. Data from the European Travel Data Centre were analysed to compare destinations, purpose of trip, travel patterns, seasonality and modal choice. The level of trip-making and frequency is compared from market to market in Europe and is shown to be the most important mobility factor in differentiating between European states. Growth in the number of trips in Europe is traced. Future developments are anticipated, in particular increasing travel from Eastern Europe.
