Abstract

During the last two decades, several telematics functions have been introduced to support the day-to-day operation of public transport services: (1) priority at intersections; (2) automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems; (3) platform allocation and passenger information at bus stations; (4) on-board driver assistance, including ticketing and passenger information; (5) punctuality control; (6) passenger counting; (7) regularity control and line transfer synchronisation; and (8) technical vehicle status. This paper describes a system developed by Peek Traffic BV in The Netherlands which integrates all these functions into one scalable system. The system's main objectives are attractiveness for passengers, operational support for drivers and dispatchers, optimal fleet utilisation, and better long-term planning. The system architecture is described from the following viewpoints: organisational perspective, communication architecture, positioning system, and client-server architecture. The database structure is defined according to an extended Transmodel pre-standard. Peek Traffic has installed its first integrated TravelTime application, based on the new architecture, in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the first phase, 114 buses have an on-board computer, and 25 bus stops have a passenger information display.
