TREATMENT OF OPPOSED TURNING MOVEMENTS IN TRAFFIC SIGNAL CALCULATIONS.

Abstract

VARIOUS TECHNIQUES FOR DEALING IN TRAFFIC SIGNAL CALCULATIONS WITH TRAFFIC TURNING FROM A TWO-WAY STREET ACROSS THE PATH OF TRAFFIC MOVING FROM THE OPPOSITE ARM OF THE JUNCTION ARE REVIEWED. WAYS OF USING THE TECHNIQUES TO BEST ADVANTAGE IN ASSESSING THE TRAFFIC CAPACITY OF SIGNAL-CONTROLLED JUNCTIONS AND IN CALCULATING SIGNAL SETTINGS TO MAXIMIZE CAPACITY OR TO MINIMIZE DELAY ARE DESCRIBED. ACCOUNT IS TAKEN OF THE DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES THAT THIS TURNING TRAFFIC MAY HAVE FOR CROSSING THE PATH OF THE OPPOSING TRAFFIC. SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE TURNING TRAFFIC HAS EXCLUSIVE LANES AND THOSE IN WHICH IT SHARES LANES WITH OTHER TRAFFIC ARE DISCUSSED SEPARATELY. NEW APPROXIMATE EXPRESSIONS FOR DELAY TO TURNING TRAFFIC ARE PROPOSED FOR CONDITIONS NOT COVERED BY EXISTING EXPRESSIONS. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR FURTHER RESEARCH.(Author/publisher).
