Large areas in the Northern part of Western Australia comprise highly reactive clay soil that forms terrain referred to as Gilgai. Expansive clay is also found in the South West of the State. Potential for shrink and swell damage to infrastructure such as road and airport pavements on this type of soil is a major challenge to engineers. This paper presents methods adopted for the treatment of Gilgai soil for the Karratha to Tom Price Road project, the mechanical stabilisation of expansive clays for the New Perth to Bunbury Highway near Perth and the results of stabilisation of Gilgai soil using two conventional binders for an airport construction project in Western Australia. The aim of this paper is to increase the knowledge of the properties and insitu behavior of fine-grained reactive subgrade soils and facilitate their wider use in pavement construction.
