This study was designed to determine how rural bus services in England have changed in the five years following deregulation under the Transport Act 1985. Four counties, each with a large rural component were selected as a sample. They were Northumberland, Shropshire, Hampshire and Cambridgeshire. In each case levels of rural services were derived from timetables, and the cost of subsidy estimated from local authority information, thus allowing determination of change over the period of interest.
