Some of the problems, particularly those related to engineering aspects, of developing useful simulation systems for research on the driving task and someof the approaches which may help to solve these problems have been revieved. Techniques applying to both-fixed-base and on-the-road simulation have been briefly described. Although the fundamental question on the role which simulation can play in driving research remains unanswered, it is hoped that this discussion has, at least, emphasized the need for matching driving task research with simulator research.
