Abstract

About 30 bicycle riders are killed and 1200 reported by the police as injured each year on Victorian roads. Head injuries are the cause of about 80% of cyclist fatalities and constitute 35% of reported injuries. Since 1980 helmet wearing promotion campaigns have resulted in substantial increases in bicycle helmet wearing rates. Recent trends in bicyclist casualty numbers and in helmet usage rate are reported. (Author/publisher)
