Abstract

At the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Center of Japan AutomobileResearch Institute (JARI), an internal research group formed in fiscal 1998 has been conducting continuous surveys and studies to monitor the status of ITS policies and development activities. The aim of this work is to identify issues that should be addressed to promote the future development of ITS services. This paper describes the latest trends in the areas of driver information services, typified by car navigation and telematics, electronic toll collection (ETC) and dedicated short-range communication (DSRC)-based services and safe driving support technologies. This information was gathered from a report published in November 2008 concerning the ITS industry in Japan. Issues that should be addressed to facilitate further development of ITS services are also discussed.
