Abstract

The existing legislation which aims to provide protection for the occupant in Europe is discussed. Present design requirements are not optimal. The possibilities of a transition towards performance standards are outlined. Some of the wider consequences of high levels of seat belt use are discussed in terms of the increased importance of pedestrian and motorcyclist casualties.
