Abstract

Trends in volume of goods transport, numbers of heavy goods vehicles licensed, and average carrying capacities over the past 15 years are analysed. Data on expenditure on transport by industry obtained from censuses of production are presented. Forecasts are made of numbers of heavy goods vehicles and amounts of travel by heavy goods vehicles that can be expected if recent trends continue. It is estimated that in the year 2010 there may be over a million heavy goods vehicles in Great Britain and that they will travel about 33 thousand million kilometres (a). (This report is a revised version of the paper "Trends in transport of goods in Great Britain", which was presented at the PTRC Symposium on Freight Traffic Models, Amsterdam, May 4-7, 1971.
