Abstract

Classification of road surfaces in terms of their reflection characteristics is used to pre-determine their luminance. Surfaces may be subjectively classified as light or dark, shining or dull. However, a more precise objective classification is required, based on measurement of the characteristic physical parameters of the surface. Various classifications are reviewed and explained and the advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed.
