Abstract

The aim of this presentation is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art with regard to an incident-detection system inside tunnels. One of the main concerns of tunnel traffic management authorities is to be able to learn about an incident occuring inside a tunnel in real time. This effect may imply the need to act upon road signals in order to close the tunnel to incoming traffic, if necessary. Therefore, the Incident Detection Systems represent a basic tool for ensuring road safety and for creating accurate and adaptable management and development of these unique elements that exist within the road network. In reviewing the systems that this presentation will cover, mention should first be made of those systems that can indicate that a fire has started inside the tunnel. Another incident worth noting is the traffic jam caused by a queueing effect or even by a single stopped car inside the tunnel because of mechanical problems, or for any other reason. (A)
