The realization that man is seriously threatening his living environment has increased markedly over recent years. Traffic and transportation are major sources of environmental pollution. To protect the environment from further detioration, it is important, particularly in this area, that behavioural changes are applied on a large scale, which implies that all car users either travel less or travel in a more environmentally acceptable manner. As the car is a means of transportation that is rather damaging for the natural environment, one of the objectives of the present environmental policy in The Netherlands is to restrict private car use. This thesis describes an investigation on how private car use investigation on how private car use can be reduced by applying influence techniques based on behavioural science. An attempt is made to gain insight into the psychological resistance that is aroused when these influence techniques are applied to private car use. (A)
