U.K. cycle routes programme. Implementation and initial findings.

Abstract

The English Department of Transport had for a number of years encouraged local highway authorities to consider providing facilities for cyclists and had provided them with technical advice. The Cycle Routes Programme extended a series of innovatory schemes to larger scale projects. A 5 year cycle route research in 5 cities begun. This paper describes the development of these projects. It covers the planning, the problems and the achievements through the design, implementation and monitoring stages.
