Abstract

The relationship between accident risk and traffic volume is dealt with. For this purpose accident data and the results of permanent traffic counts on 10 motorway sections and 5 sections of other roads outside built-up areas are being made use of. The accident situation is represented by the accident rate and accident cost rate. Supplementary measurements of traffic flow showed that the proportion of dangerous vehicle spacings increased with increasing traffic volume. This proportion is also related to vehicle speeds.
