Abstract

In the eight months between the 8th July. 1976 and 8th March. 1977 the Study Team investigated 879 vehicle crashes involving utility poles in the Melbourne Metropolitan area. Property damage only accidents as well as casualty accidents were studied. There were 31 fatalities and 374 injured persons as a result of the 879 utility pole collisions. This is a preliminary report which outlines the project objectives, the scope of the data collected and the proposed project program. A breakdown by accident type for the accident sample and the random site sample is also presented.
