Abstract

Details are given of a pilot project, set up by the California Division of Highway' s Freeway Operations Department, on a 42-mile loop comprising three major motorways in the Los Angeles region. The surveillance system includes buried wires providing instant data on traffic volume and density, telemetering equipment to relay the data to the central centre, and computerised equipment at the centre. In addition, a helicopter transmits pictures of congested areas over closed circuit television to the control centre.
