In West Germany the motorways and main roads are as a rule built with a lane width of 3.75 m. Since 1974 a reduced motorway cross-section with a lane width of 3.50 m. is permitted. Traffic measurements were performed on traffic density and composition and the behaviour of drivers in respect of lateral distances for each traffic lane. The influence of the lane width on traffic flow characteristics and on the behaviours of drivers in respect of lateral distances is investigated.
