Abstract

The article reviews several recent studies that try to answer the basic question: should school buses have seat belts. The findings of 1987 National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation of 43 accidents involving large school buses, an NTSB 1986 study referencing 100 cases on lap-belt induced injuries in automobile crashes, and another NTSB study of 24 small school bus crashes are discussed.
