Abstract

In this article Dr. Basil Scoft and Mr. L. Kuziomko of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles tell about the history of vision examinations for drivers in the State, and how the recent Federal Highway Safety Program Standard forced a change upon the program. Data from New York's previous vision examination program has shown that 1) the program is effective in fostering eye examinations among the public; 2) individuals whose vision has fallen below standard detected and informed of the defect; and 3) in almost every case the visual defect can and is being corrected.
