Abstract

The purposes of the study were to compare road safety in new residential districts with traffic separation but with different layouts and to analyze the location of accidents and their connection with the traffic environment. A formula is presented where the number of accidents is a function of traffic generated measured in vehicle km. Many individual accidents can probably be explained by mistakes and drawbacks in the layout of traffic environment. Traffic safety in residential districts is primarily determined by the physical layout of the traffic systems and built environment.
