The average estimated fuel consumption of heavy lorries during 1997 was 0,43 l/km based on a survey (UVAV). Apart from fuel consumption, the answers, 1513 usable responses, include a large number of variables, which describe both the vehicle and the transports made. A primary object was to compare the fuel factors that are used in monitoring exhaust emissions by road traffic. Those fuel factors used during monitoring, both nationally and internationally, are 16-33 per cent lower than the fuel factors obtained in this study. The results also describe the fuel consumption with respect to different combinations of body type, total weight year model, engine power, distance- (l/km) and tonne km (l/tonne km) specific fuel consumption.
