Abstract

Hinged raisings and lowering columns and devices used with street lighting are reviewed. Reference is made to big. flagstaffs, the problems of the railways and telescoped hinged lattice towers used for transmitting aerials. Mention is made of types in current use and of the need for hinged columns, where there is not access for a tower wagon or mobile platform unit. Types of locking mechanisms are discussed together with counterbalance systems in use and the need to make the equipment vandal proof.
