Abstract

The research program described in this report was carried out to investigate traffic movement through urban intersections. These efforts have been directed at determining the factors that affect the safety and efficiency of traffic in the intersection situation. Some of the factors analysed were intersection control, vehicle characteristics, and driver characteristics. The formulation of a computer simulation model was the central effort of this project. The model formulation proceeded from an earlier feasibility study (Kidd and Laughery, 1964) which also generated requirements for much of the experimental work done as part of this project. The experimental work included specific laboratory and full- scale studies as well as observational studies of real-world traffic.
