Abstract

This document is a supplement to the 1986 TAC Manual of Geometric Design Standards, since re-named the "Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads". It provides additional standards and design practice for urban application. In urban areas, there has been a trend in recent years towards the development of pedestrian-oriented and transit-friendly mixes use urban centres. In these cases the related urban streets take on a much broader role than simply that of carrying vehicles. They become integral components of the mixed-use urban environment, and in response the design team is made up typically of land use planners, urban designers and landscape architects, as well as tranpsortation engineers. This supplement to the 1986 TAC Guide contains useful information to assist in the design of such urban projects. (A)
