Abstract

Real time traffic data is becoming significantly more important for traffic management. There are three main real-time traffic data methods in the real-time data collection field, i.e. Fixed traffic detectors, space-air borne techniques and probe vehicles. The high cost of measurement limits the application of fixed traffic detectors and space-air borne techniques in traffic data collection. Multi-source and various types/formats of information mingled cannot be processed easily is also an important issue. With the development of wireless location and communication technology, probe vehicles have been widely used for real-time traffic data collection all over the world because of their low cost and wide coverage. In this paper, real-time, urban traffic data collection system frameworks based on probe vehicles are discussed and key problems of probe technology are also analyzed in detail. As a proposal, this paper also provides a design for a traffic data fusion procedure for multi-source data resources including probe vehicles, fixed traffic detectors and other effective data resources.
